Ayurveda: The Science of Life
(V) The Ayurvedic Tradition
INDIA: A vast land that has witnessed the struggle of Empires & Civilisations. Conflicts which in turn, leave a new creation – memories of past grandeur, inspiring & laying foundations for Civilisations to come..
Recalling the trek to “Ghorka Durbar” – a quaint village in central Nepal:
Walking up the lush valleys & fields, one can see ordinary houses belonging to families, working the land.
Further up the hill you are greeted by the posts & barracks of warriors – protectors of the people, leading to the hilltop: wherein stands the Palace of the King – managing the affairs of his kingdom.

Ghorka Durbar
However this still was not the apex of Ghorka Durbar, for at the helm of Ghorka – having the best view, rested a tiny abode: barely two people could fit inside, it was furnished with the simplest items of bare necessity!
The wise old man used to live here, giving advice & vision to the King – one could say that the apex of society rested on this old man; wherein his insight & intuition held weight upon the King’s decisions & thus the entire municipality.
As the wise man in Ghorka Durbar, many sages throughout India have understood the world around them & passed on their “eternal gifts”, disciple to disciple, eventually reaching – the entire world.
The science of Ayurveda is no exception.
Introduction to Ayurveda

Sri Dhanvantari: Source of Ayurveda
Ayurveda; “The Science of Life” was a system of health care practiced & maintained over 5,500 years ago by the ancient Rishis of India.
The fruit of experiments, observations & deep meditation were passed on orally in the “Master-Disciple tradition” before being placed in written form – thousands of years later.
The Rig Veda, containing verses on the Nature of Existence is the oldest surviving book of any Indo-European language (3000 B.C)

Proto Indo European language
The Rishis sourced such “Vedic knowledge” into the subject of holistic health, to compile the oldest medical book in the world: the Atreya Samhita.
Ayurveda emphasizes the prevention of disease through the rejuvenation of our body systems.
“The two basic causes of disease are the under activity and over activity of the life energy, prana”
– Paramahamsa Yogananda
Ayurveda is a complete system of health.
Ayurvedic practitioners in India receive state-recognized university training entailing many years of rigorous study.
Once graduated, these practitioners play a role in preserving “the thread of tradition”.
They possess a vast understanding the unique mind-body constitution of the individual in order to diagnose & treat any ailment.
- Published laboratory & clinical studies have documented reductions in cardiovascular disease risk factors, effectiveness in treating certain cancers, infectious disease, diabetes & other diseases in using Ayurvedic methods and herbal preparations:
- One must choose the most authentic, traditional Ayurvedic centre & source supplies therein with the consultation of a verified Ayurvedic practitioner.
- Many so called “Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies” sold within India & throughout the internet have indicated high levels of lead & other heavy metals within them, eventually leading the public to discredit the entire Art because of this insensitive mass-production.

The Health & Wellbeing at Kalariyil Ashram proposed in Exclusive Adventure Asia is a rare example of a modern institution where no deviation from Traditional Methods is permitted.
Medicines are made from pure & natural ingredients.
They are concocted by hand, using a wood fire. There is no commercial mass production, so full emphasis can be placed on the quality of the medicine.
Traditional Indian medicine places utmost importance on the food we eat, good food will lead to a healthy body, which in turn will lead to a healthy mind – this is practiced by growing food & medicinal plants in a sustainable organic way, within the Ashram itself.
